18th Sunday in Ordinary Time, 31st July, 2011

Alone Time

Earlier this year I read a selection of entries for a Mother’s Day competition, in which sons and daughters described why their mother deserved the prize.  The entries had several themes in common – She never does anything for herself; she’s always thinking of other people; I can’t remember when she last had a break.

In today’s Gospel it is Jesus who needs a break.  It is a very human Jesus that we encounter.  Having learnt of the death of John the Baptist, Jesus withdraws from the crowds in a boat to a ‘deserted place’.  Like any of us, he feels the need to be alone from time to time, and this is a time of particular pressure for him.  He has been preaching solidly for some time, Herod is asking questions, and now he hears his cousin John has been killed.

But there is little time for rest.  Seeing the crowds that follow him, Jesus feels another very human emotion – pity.  The disciples are protective of Jesus and want the people to go away, but Jesus has other ideas.  It is a compassionate Jesus who addresses the hunger of his large crowd of followers.

While he needs time to reflect and pray, and we can only imagine how tired and weary he feels, he is happy to postpone his own needs it while he cares for his flock.  It’s an example followed by many a parent.  But it is interesting to note what follows the story of the feeding of the five thousand.  Having dismissed the crowds, Jesus makes another attempt to retreat by himself, this time up a mountain.  His alone time is important.

St. Rioch’s Cemetery Mass

The annual Mass for those buried at St. Rioch’s Cemetery, Walkin Street will take place on Thursday, 4th August at 7.30pm.  All are welcome.

Questions People Ask

Q.  Did St. Peter really walk on water?  It defies the laws of science. Or is this a sort of story for the sake of making a point?

A.  A miracle is some happening which goes beyond the normal laws of science.  As far as I am concerned, it would not bother me if somebody could prove that Peter’s act never actually happened.  What appeals to me in the story is the lesson that as long as Peter kept his eyes on Jesus he could walk through the storm, but once he concentrated on the wild wind and billowing sea, he began to sink.  But even then, the Lord stretched out a hand to save him.  It is a story giving immense encouragement.

Foulkstown Cemetery

Thanks to all who participated and made the cemetery Mass last Thursday a  wonderful success.  We are extremely grateful to the cemetery committee who, yet again, pulled out all the stops in having the cemetery looking top shape for this annual gathering in remembrance of loved ones.

Now, down to business.  Due to a recent accidental fire in the waste facility in Foulkstown Cemetery we have closed this area in the cemetery and hired a skip to take away the waste.  As you can imagine this is enormously expensive as all waste has to be disposed of in the proper manner (which we have been doing thus far).  Therefore this skip is only for grave wreaths and flowers from graves.  It is NOT for household or other waste.  Anyone caught dumping illegally will be reported to the litter warden.  We are sorry to be so blunt but when it costs the parish thousands of euro in waste disposal  and some people show little regard for this holy resting place, we have to take appropriate action.

We are grateful to all who keep our cemetery well maintained.

The Millionaire’s Testimony
At a church meeting a very wealthy man rose to tell the rest of those present about his Christian faith. “I’m a millionaire,” he said, “and I attribute it all to the rich blessings of God in my life. I remember that turning point in my faith. I had just earned my first dollar  and I went to a church meeting that night. The speaker was a missionary who told about his work. I knew that I only had a dollar bill and had to either give it all to God’s work or nothing at all. So at that moment I decided to give my whole dollar to God. I believe that God blessed that decision, and that is why I am a rich man today.”
He finished and there was an awed silence at his testimony as he moved toward his seat. As he sat down a little old lady sitting in the same pew leaned over and said to him: “I dare you to do it again!”

Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time, 24th, July 2011

Foulkstown Cemetery Mass
The annual Foulkstown Cemetery Mass will take place on this Thursday, 28th July.  Mass will begin at 7.30pm  As usual large crowds are expected for this annual event.  We appeal to all to be patient and careful on your journey to and from the cemetery.  Please follow the advice of the Gardai and stewards on the evening.
The Cemetery Committee has made great efforts to have our burial ground looking very well on the evening and we thank them sincerely for their voluntary work.  We appeal to plot owners to attend to family graves in preparation for Thursday evening and invite your family and friends, especially those who live some distance away, to come along.

Have you understood?
‘Have you understood all this?’ Jesus asks his disciples.  Over the past few weeks we have heard Jesus speak in many parables as he moves around Galilee, speaking to the crowds from an offshore boat and explaining the parables privately to his disciples.  You can imagine the crowds outside still puzzling over what Jesus has said, even as the privileged disciples get the benefit of his interpretation.  And we, too, are treated to this ‘insider’ view.  The parables of Jesus challenge us to look at the world in a different way.  Jesus asks them to keep his listener’s attention.  They are not supposed to be straightforward; they are more like riddles, intended to tease the mind.  The parables often begin ‘The kingdom of heaven is like...’, and today’s Gospel contains three such comparisons to illustrate the supreme value of the kingdom of heaven – it is like treasure hidden in a field, a pearl, a haul of fish which will be separated into good and bad.  The succession of metaphors can be confusing as we try to get our head around what Jesus is trying to tell us about the mysteries of his kingdom.  Which one resonates with you?

Envelope Collection
Last weekend your contribution was €2,095.00.  Thank you for your generosity.

Questions People Ask
Q.  How might a person apply the parable of the hidden treasure in life today?  What is this hidden treasure?

A.  This is one of seven parables about the kingdom of God.  The kingdom, or reign of God, means that a person accepts the importance of God in life and resolves to live by God’s law.  It is the key to inner peace.  Sadly, for many the treasure remains hidden because they search in the wrong places.  As C.S. Lewis put it, there is a God-shaped emptiness in the human heart.  Knowing Christ Jesus is a treasure awaiting discovery.

The New Roman Missal
What should we, as a faith community, reflect on as we prepare to use the new Missal?

We have been praying our current texts for over thirty-five years.  Moving to new texts will be a challenge and will require that we exercise patience and support for one another.  Priests and people, musicians and others involved in preparing the liturgy all need to work together to make the change as easy as it can be.  Ultimately we need to remember that the words of our liturgy are crucial - we pray as we believe.  But when we pray the Mass we do more than recite words – those words are recited in the context of all the actions, symbols and people of the liturgy.  As we work towards implementing the changes, may we keep in mind the bigger task of which the words of the Missal are a part: namely the Mystery of our Faith, the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ made present for us in the Eucharist.

Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time, 17th July 2011

Humble Beginnings
Have you ever marvelled at how rapidly an idea can ‘grow legs’ from so small a start?  Described as ‘the day rock and roll changed the world’, one of the largest fundraising events of the 20th century, Live Aid, sprang from the desire of one man, Bob Geldof, to do something to lessen the suffering of those experiencing famine in Africa.  A Christmas charity single quickly snowballed into a massive international event which raised 150 million.
Similarly, the 2000 movie Pay it Forward (based on the novel by Catherine Ryan Hyde) outlines how one small deed can have wide and life-changing consequences.  And over the past 11 years the idea of ‘paying forward’ a good deed has developed into a social movement with the goal of making the world a better place.
It always strikes me that the mustard seed in the short parable of today’s Gospel is ‘the smallest of all the seeds’.  Yet it grows into the biggest shrub of all and even acts as a shelter for the birds of the air.  The parable speaks to us about the humble beginnings of the kingdom of God with Jesus and his disciples, and its growth.
But the story of the mustard seed does not stand alone here; again Jesus surrounds it with more parables about the weeds among the wheat, and the yeast, using images that would have been familiar to the people of the time.  The mysteries of the kingdom of God cannot be grasped from one story.  Life is not straightforward, and neither is our understanding of our role in the kingdom.
The kingdom of heaven is not a far off place, time or dimension.  It is the here and now.  We are called to spread the word in whatever way we can.  Who knows how our seeds will grow?
Triona Doherty

Questions People Ask
Q. What will the Eucharistic Congress next June be like? I’ve seen pictures of the 1932 Congress when there were about a million people at the Phoenix Park.  Can we expect a huge event like the Papal visit in 1979?
A.  This time there will be less emphasis on big numbers.  The biggest event will be Mass in Croke Park.  There will be more emphasis on seminars, lectures, exhibitions and concerts, all designed to deepen our appreciation of the extraordinary gift of the Eucharist.  The theme of the Congress is ‘Communion with Christ and Communion with One Another’.  It is the second part, communion with one another, which is the problem for many Mass-goers.

The New Roman Missal
What differences can we expect in November 2011?
From 27th November, the First Sunday of Advent, congregations and priests will use the texts of the new edition of the Roman Missal for the celebration of Mass. While the structure, actions and pattern of the Mass will remain the same and the readings will be unchanged, the texts of recited prayers will sound different to our ears. Over time, as the new style of language becomes familiar to us, it is very much hoped that we will come to appreciate both the richness and depth of our prayer at Mass.
