Twenty Second Sunday in Ordinary Time, 29th August 2010

High Flyers
Cleo, a 13 year-old pet parrot, is usually a model macaw. But one day she has a panic attack and just lost it. She shot up 15m (50 ft) into a tree and couldn’t come down. Having branched out, she fazed out. Her owner had to hire a cherry picker to bring the petrified parrot down to earth. Cleo had never flown so high before, her owner said, and she thought that the unfortunate bird just didn’t know how to come down. The moral of the story? Don’t be a bird-brained high flyer. Today’s readings have high flyers and ‘bird brains’ in mind when they say: be humble. Sirach tells us to go about our business with humility (3:17). Luke gives some street-wise advice on not being pushy in public and hogging the limelight (Luke 14:100. Both readings come with a health warning on losing the run ourselves. Humility gets a bad press usually. It seems a weakness to many, a sign of immaturity, or a personality defect. Today’s go-getter geist is aggressive and competitive, not kind and cooperative. It operates an in-your-face, nothing-succeeds-like-success marketplace. There are no humility-friendly zones there. In part, that’s because humility isn’t a loner. It brings friends: reverence for the sacredness of human life, respect for every person, a willingness to accept gracefully that others may be more intelligent, gifted and capable. And the most bothersome buddy of all: regard for God. To prevent panic attacks, and high flying that puts you out a limb, avoid cherry picking. Just take the straight and narrow.

Questions people ask
Do we have to believe the Bible’s account of the first 6 days of creation?
It is not a scientific account but an imaginative, poetic reflection on the origins of life. First we get three separations: light from darkness, the waters above from the waters below, then dry land from water. The next three stages see the adornment of the separated entitles: light is adorned by the sun, moon and stars; sea and land are adorned with fish and winged birds; on the sixth day, the image and likeness of God. The goodness of all creation is repeatedly stated and the glory of human life is especially stressed.

To contact the priest on duty, simply dial the parish number 7764400 and select the ‘Priest on Duty’ option. This will put you through to one of the priests..

Last weeks special collection for the flood victims of Pakistan raised €8694 from St. Patrick’s Parish. The money was sent last Tuesday to Diocesan office for forwarding to Trocaire the Irish Aid Agency..

Irish Catholic Newspaper
This truly excellent Catholic newspaper is for sale in all our churches and we encourage people to purchase a copy as a way of keeping up to date with all that is happening within our Church. It features a wide range of articles and opinions that are relevant to today’s Church. While most other media fails to give a fair or accurate view of the Church, the Irish Catholic gives us unparalleled coverage in Church happenings. And the newspaper isn’t some fawning voice either, it’s not afraid to call a spade a spade and offer constructive criticism where necessary.

First Friday

And Finally
A little boy was listening to a long and excessively boring sermon in church. Suddenly the red sanctuary lamp caught his eye. Tugging his father`s sleeve, he said, "Daddy, when that light turns green can we go?"

Twenty First Sunday in Ordinary Time, 22nd August 2010

The second collection at all Masses this weekend will be for Pakistan

The Punisher
An atheist doesn’t usually feel the need for a supernatural being – and one that’s a punisher to boot! But last year at the annual conference of the British Association of Science its president said that religion may have helped to protect society from itself in the past, and may be needed to do so again. His concern was not for divinity but for human failure, as he saw it, to take effective action against global warming. A supernatural punisher, he suggested, might be part of the solution. That’s raising global warming to the fire and brimstone temperature of pulpit thumpers of yesteryear. He’d like today’s Second Reading (Heb 12:5-7, 11-13) as it talks about being punished by the Lord. However, verse 6 is a quotation from the Book of Proverbs 3:12. The language there is softer, less punitive than in Hebrews, at least in the NRSV Bible. In Proverbs we have ‘reprove’ not ‘punish’; and a father who ‘delights’ in his son, and not merely ‘accepts’ him, as in Hebrews. Impressions are important. They must have blur our image of the loving God we believe in. He who delights in us in not vindictive or judgemental. But neither is he a softie. Evil exists up to its most abhorrent forms because of a misuse of the freedom our loving God gave us. When we misuse it there are consequences always. They’re built in to the way things are. Unfortunately, there are times when we can’t seem to learn by any other means than through the dire consequences of out acts.

Questions people ask
Q. I am sometimes addicted to pornography on the internet. Afterwards I feel really ashamed. But I fall again and again. Any advice?
Yes, it is a form of addiction. As with any addiction it takes away freedom. The first step in rehabilitation is the humble admission of having lost your freedom in dealing with the problem. Then you must sincerely ask for God’s help, not just once, but every time you open your internet. For somebody addicted to alcohol, what is important is not to take the first drink. For you, the important step is not to switch on the site where you lose your freedom and dignity.

Trocaire
Trócaire staff are reporting that children are filling plastic bottles with filthy water from canals for their families and using it for washing, cooking and even drinking.  This puts them at extreme risk of contracting illnesses from water-borne diseases, but they have no choice - Bishop Kirby
A national collection will be held this weekend, 21 and 22 August, in Catholic churches across Ireland in aid of survivors of Pakistan's devastating floods.  Bishop John Kirby, Bishop of Clonfert and Chairman of Trócaire, is urging Irish parishioners to support collections in their local parishes so as to help Pakistani people cope with the worst flooding in the history of the State.  Trócaire is the official overseas development agency of the Catholic Church in Ireland. Trócaire is providing emergency food, clean water, water purification tablets, cooking utensils, sleeping mats, sanitary goods and other essential items for thousands of affected families. It is ensuring that children and the most vulnerable get enough calories to protect their health. The organisation will work with the Pakistani people to recover in the long-term by rebuilding homes and helping people to begin farming and earning a living once the flooding subsides.

The walk/talk will take us from there to John's Bridge. Following the River walk those taking part will be invited to return to Rothe House where we have a range of attractions to entertain and inform.  All are invited to Rothe House at 8.15 blunt (as opposed to sharp!) after the walk even if you do not care to take part in the walk element of the evening.

Parish Team
Come September, St. Patrick’s Parish will begin the process of recruiting new members onto the Parish Pastoral Team. This follows the retirement of a number of current team members who have served over 8 years and now wish to retire and allow ‘new blood’ onto the team. We are extremely grateful to our outgoing members who have worked long and hard to build our parish into what it is today.
For those of you who are not familiar with the Parish Team, the Team consists of lay men and women (and religious) who work with and assist the priests in the planning and running of the Parish. The Team meets on a regular basis to discern and plan for the future of St. Patrick’s.
If you are a regular mass goer who is interested in how our parish grows and develops then perhaps you might consider putting your name forward as a candidate. More on this in the coming weeks.

Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time, 15th August, 2010

Welcome to St. Patrick’s Parish
We join in giving a warm welcome to Fr. Rahul Phillips S.A.C. who will be living and working in our parish for the next five weeks. Fr. Rahul is from Raipur in Central India and is currently studying in Rome. He is a member of the Society of Catholic Apostolate (The Pallottines) and was ordained to the priesthood in 2006.
We know you will make him feel at home among us.

Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary
This feast really is a test of faith. Today’s First and Second Readings don’t make things any easier. I suppose for many it’s just a feast and that’s it. Just something we commemorate because the Church teaches infallibly that it happened. Interestingly, she says nothing about how it happened but asserts that it did. I think this feast should not be seen as an isolated event. If today’s readings are telling us anything it’s that the event we commemorate is part of a grand plan unfolding. The First Reading from the Apocalypse, using what for us at this distance is very strange imagery, tells of the conflict between good and evil. We can all identify with that to some degree as we experience this tug-of-war on a daily basis in our own lives. The purpose of this reading and its weird symbols is not to tell us that such conflict occurs – we know that already – but that the outcome is assured: victory for the good. That is not something we may know already, or always experience. We may be duped at times into thinking that evil is more powerful than good. How wrong we would be should we think that way. Today’s feast should help to convince us of that. So too should our Second Reading from Paul (1 Cor 15: 20-26): ‘The last enemy to be destroyed is death.’ Mary did not undergo death as we know it, according to Church teaching. She did not undergo bodily corruption. In Jesus’ resurrection, the perceived finality of death has been shattered.
Fr. Tom Cahill SVD

St. Fiacre’s Well Annual Novena
The annual novena prayers begin at St. Fiacre’s Well, Kilfera at 8.00pm on next Saturday, 21st August and continue at the same time on each evening of the following week. The novena will conclude with public prayers at the well at 3.00pm on Sunday, 29th August followed by the celebration of Mass. All are encouraged to make this a special time of prayer in our parish.

Priests’ Reunion
Priests ordained at St. Kieran’s College will gather in Kilkenny for a reunion on this Tuesday, 17th August 2010. The priests will have a number of workshops and lectures at the college during the day. The event will end with a public Mass of Thanksgiving in St. Mary’s Cathedral at 6.15pm on that evening. The people of the diocese are invited to join in this unique celebration which will also mark the official ending of the ‘Year of Priests’ in the Diocese of Ossory.

Attention Choir Members
Choir members from our parish are invited to participate in this diocesan celebration.  There will be a practice in St Mary's Cathedral on this Sunday, 15th August at 7.00pm for approximately one hour.  The range of music will include many well-known pieces and also some new pieces that will enhance the work of the choir in the parish.
Due to an unfortunate communications error this invitation to our choir members was misdirected. For this we apologise and appeal to any available choristers to join in the rehearsal and/or Mass of Thanksgiving.

St. Vincent de Paul
The monthly collection for the St. Patrick’s Parish Conference of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul will be taken up at all Masses this weekend. Please give as generously as possible to this local charity.

Questions People Ask
Q. Since the Assumption of Mary is not mentioned in the Bible, why does the Church celebrate the Feast of the Assumption?
A. Surely you are not suggesting that the Mother of Jesus is not in heaven! The privileges bestowed on Mary are an advanced indication of what God has in store for all who belong to the family of her Son. It is expressed beautifully in the Preface of the Feast: ‘The virgin Mother of God was taken up to heaven to be the beginning and pattern of the Church in its perfection, and a sign of hope and comfort for your people on their pilgrim way.’ It is also a celebration of the sacred dignity of the human body.

What is Celibacy?
Celibacy can be a choice in life, or a condition imposed by circumstances. While attending a Marriage Renewal Weekend, Bill and his wife Ann listened to the instructor declare, "It is essential that husbands and wives know the things that are important to each other..."  He then addressed the men, 'Can you name and describe your wife's favourite flower?'  Bill leaned over, touched Ann's arm gently, and whispered, 'It’s Tesco’s self-raising, isn't it?' And thus began Bill's life of celibacy…

Nineteenth Sunday in Ordainary Time, 8th August, 2010

Welcome
We welcome all who have come to our city and parish for the Kilkenny Arts Festival. We hope your visit will be pleasant and memorable.

On the Ball
Scientists can be on the ball just as much as footballers. Take Danish physicist Niels Bohr (d. 1962) for example. He watched westerns. As he did, he noted that something strange happened in them: the gunslinger who went for his gun first, often was the one who was shot first – even though he had the advantage. Bohr was fast enough to draw the correct conclusion from what he saw: reacting is faster than acting. It has not been confirmed that we move faster when we react to something that someone else is doing than when we start to do something ourselves – about 21 milliseconds faster. How fast are we on the draw when responding to God’s word? In today’s Gospel reading (Luke 12:32-48) God says he gives us the kingdom. How do we react to that? Do we change because of it? God doesn’t hesitate to give. We mustn’t hesitate to respond. We can’t claim that we don’t know what to do because it’s spelled out for us: we’ve to sell our possessions, give alms, make purses that don’t wear out because the treasure they contain is in heaven; we’ve to be dressed for action, have our lamps lit and be ready for the Master’s return. In short, we react to the gift of God’s kingdom by living like people who belong to it. So we live with thanks for the precious gift of life. We share that gift graciously with others. We react to life with love, generosity, faith and courage.
That’s really being on the ball!
Fr. Tom Cahill SVD

Broadcast Masses
The final broadcast Mass in the present series from our parish will take place today. The 10.00am Mass at St. Joseph’s Church, Foulkstown will be broadcast to the nation by RTE. Fr. Roderick will be the celebrant and the broadcast goes out on Long Wave 252. We wish all involved the very best.

Questions People Ask
Q. What is meant by the Prosperity Gospel?
A. This is a misleading concept of God’s blessing promulgated especially by American television evangelists. They claim that handling your life over to Jesus guarantees the earthly blessings of prosperity, success and health. But what of people who do not experience such so-called blessings? We are told that they are being punished for their sins, perhaps for the sins of ancestors in the family tree. This Prosperity Gospel or Cadillac Christianity is a contradiction of the teaching of Jesus who declared the blessedness of the poor, powerless and persecuted.

Trócaire and Floods in Pakistan
The death toll in northwest Pakistan has reached almost 1,500 with 2 million people homeless and 3 million people affected after the worst flooding in living memory.
Trócaire has been working in Pakistan for over 20 years. We are well placed to respond quickly to the disaster and to give assistance to the people who need it most. Trócaire staff is working with our Pakistani partner organisations to get aid directly to survivors.
Cecil Dunne is Trócaire’s Emergency Officer in Pakistan.  He is coordinating the response from Islamabad. He says the situation is really desperate for survivors, “floodwaters have washed away people, homes, bridges, water systems and medical facilities. Survivors have been left with nothing; no home, no food and no livestock as more rain starts to fall”.
Trócaire is providing food, water, water purification tablets, cooking utensils, high energy biscuits for children and sanitary supplies to survivors.  In the Nowshera area alone, Trócaire’s partners have been providing pre-cooked meals to over 300 families since the weekend.
South of this, in the area of Peshawar, Trócaire’s partners are providing food, water and sanitary supplies to over 1,500 families in 4 villages.
The people in the north west of Pakistan were already very vulnerable after violence there last year when a military offensive against the Taliban forced entire communities from their homes, destroying their livelihoods. Now people are on the run again, their homes, crops and livestock destroyed for a second time.
These people desperately need our support. Trócaire is providing immediate support. We will also work with our local partners in the years ahead to rebuild communities.
Up to date information and an opportunity to make a donation are available by visiting www.trocaire.org or by calling 1850 408 408. Donations can be sent by post to Trócaire, Maynooth, Co. Kildare.

Masses in Appreciation
Often on newspapers after deaths, as the family thank everyone, some wish to offer Mass for the intentions of those who sent cards etc. It is sufficient to offer just one Mass and this can be done through purchasing a Mass card from the parish centre. Note that all cards sold are individual Masses and support priests in poor countries.
Alternatively you can make arrangements for a Mass with any priest.
